Grupo Fantasma is a ten-piece, Grammy Award winning Latin funk orchestra from Austin, Texas formed in 2000 and consisting of Jose Galeano (timbales, vocals), Kino Esparza (vocals, hand percussion), Adrian Quesada (guitar), Beto Martinez (guitar), Greg Gonzalez (bass), John Speice (drums), Matthew “Sweet Lou” Holmes (congas), Gilbert Elorreaga (trumpet), Josh Levy (baritone saxophone) and Mark “Speedy” Gonzales (trombone). These Latin funk masters incorporate elements of funk, mambo, merengue, and cumbia into an inspired mix of new and traditional Latin sounds. The band is best known for their exuberant live shows and their recent association with Prince and his 3121 Club in Las Vegas. Grupo Fantasma has backed Prince on numerous occasions, including his performance on the ALMA Awards in 2007 and often perform at his afterparty jam sessions. If it’s good enough for His Purpleness it’s good enough for us. Their appeal is far beyond the Latin or World Music tags, with grooves that are universal, adventurous and funky and musicianship that is top shelf.
