It’s hard to believe that these guys have been at it for eighteen years, once the young upstarts mining Meters tunes and putting their own spin on classic New Orleans funk and now they’re recognized the world over as one of New Orleans premier purveyors of funk and good times. Seeing Galactic’s name on the bill means the party is officially ON! Galactic return to High Sierra on the heels of releasing their first Mardi Gras-themed record Carnivale Electros, a roaming street party and a Lonely Planet travel guide to Carnival (from New Orleans to Brazil) all rolled into one. The album is tireless and exhausting, just like a Mardi Gras romp (or an epic Galactic show), a riot of disparate genres and influences swathed in horns, New Orleans funk and ’90s hip-hop beats, then shot like confetti out of a cannon. It’s a superb sonic tour of the wide spectrum of sounds and feelings one experiences at carnival time (they even do a remake of “Carnival Time” with guest vocalist Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, who recorded the original version of the Mardi Gras classic back in 1960). Galactic will be bringing the New Orleans funk and the Mardi Gras magic to High Sierra for two shows (including an opening night late night session) and that means anything can happen…..just like on Mardi Gras Day.
